A More Excellent Inheritance

No one wants to be left out of the will.

Or even to receive pocket change. Yet that’s exactly what’s happening in many of America’s wealthiest families.

Roxanne Roberts in The Washington Post reports that Bill and Melinda Gates of Microsoft fame intend to leave far less than one percent of their massive fortune to their children. Musician Sting says most of his $300 million will go to charity. Tori Spelling, actress, reportedly inherited less than a million of her father’s $600 million fortune.

These people see the inherent pitfalls in giving their children too much access to unlimited wealth. It skews them into a sense of entitlement.

Yet Jamie Johnson, Johnson & Johnson heir, received $600 million in 2000 with no strings attached. He leads a relatively normal life, and used the money to launch a filmmaking career.

Sometimes it’s good to get all the money.

Hebrews 1:1-4 tells us about the inheritance of Jesus.

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”

Romans 8:17 tells us we are both sons and heirs of God and joint heirs of Christ. Jamie Johnson wasn’t the only one to inherit $600 million. Each of his five siblings got a similar amount.

Think what’s coming our way, if we’re joint heirs with Christ. That’s pretty cool, the most excellent inheritance ever given.

If we want to have it all, all we need to do is stick close to Jesus.
