Countdown to God

Consider the days God has given us. Do we use them wisely? Do we let God direct our days for his purposes?

God speaks to us in Psalm 90 and James 4. Let’s look at two points he wants to make sure we understand.

Point 1:

Psalm 90 tells us that God has no beginning or end, and that our lives are as nothing. The passage pleads for God to help us grow in wisdom.

We also learn in this passage that God has given us 70-80 years, a fact that modern medicine backs up.

In the King James Version of the Bible, it tells us to “number our days” so that we may find wisdom in our lives. Tomorrow can be snapped away from us in a heartbeat, and we have no way of knowing when.

In Luke 12:18 a rich man says, “I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones so that I can rest and be easy.”

God's answer? “Fool! Tonight your end has come.”

God does not mind us having things. However, if God is not first in our lives, things become a hindrance. Matthew 6:33 says to seek first the kingdom of God...

Point 2:

James 4 tells us that our plans are wasted, for nothing about our lives is permanent. In the King James Version, this passage tells us that our lives are as a vapor.

What is a vapor? A vapor is an insubstantial substance that we can try to grasp, and it is as if nothing is there. No one can hold onto a vapor, and no one can hold onto his days.

Time is more important than things. God knows that, and he gives us our lives as his greatest gift. Waste it and it slips through our fingers.

What if this day were our last one? What would we change about it? Who would we hug? What would we say? Where would we go?

Would God find a place in our final day's plans?

Only God knows the two most important dates for his creation, those of our birth and our death. Let him have control of all the time in between, no matter how much time we have.

In a graveyard, a person's life is marked by two dates. What has happened in our lives is represented by the dash in between. When people see our dash, how will they remember the time God gave us?

Our days are numbered, and only by turning them over to God can he help us make the best use of whatever time we have been given.
