The snooze button on an alarm clock is much more than five extra minutes of sleep. That little brown or beige or white button is in reality a second chance; it’s our opportunity to postpone the inevitable.
It can also become that sudden realization we’re late for work. If we let it, it can turn into a traffic ticket. Or worse, it might become that dreaded call into our supervisor’s office to discuss our timely attendance (or lack of it).
Then why do we enjoy snooze alarms on clocks so much? It’s the hope they provide. We see that little button, and something springs up in us. In spite of the facts, we become convinced that those few extra minutes with our eyes closed will make up for the late hours we’ve insisted on keeping.
The devil understands this concept with amazing clarity. He slaps his snooze button on everything he can find. We can’t afford to reach out and tap the devil’s snooze button and simply go back to sleep. That will take us down the path that leads to the lake of fire and brimstone we read about in Revelation 21:8.
How can we avoid the lake of fire? By keeping our hands off the snooze button. The Scriptures are clear on this.
First Example: Staying awake will give us strength.
In Luke 21:36 Jesus told the disciples to remain awake at all times in order to escape the trials that were bound to take place. Then they would be able to stand in purity before the Son of God.
That seems an odd concept to our natural man, where soldiers must rest before a battle, and a good night’s sleep seems just the thing to rebuild our strength.
Remember, though, our battle is not one of flesh and blood, rather that of the spirit. If we hit the snooze button with our spirit man, we allow a chink in our armor, and the devil will soon work his way inside.
Second Example: Staying awake will keep us ready to meet Christ when he returns.
Matthew 24:42 instructs us to stay awake, for the Son of Man comes at a time when we least expect him.
Our spirit man must constantly be on alert, even when our natural man is asleep. To wake up and realize we have hit the spiritual snooze button, and in that short span of time, the Lord has come and gone, would be too great a disappointment to endure.
The devil doesn’t especially want to convince us that God isn’t real. It’s easier just to give us a snooze button. In 2 Peter 3:3-7, we learn that scoffers in the last days will say, “The world goes on as usual. Where do we see the promise of God’s coming fulfilled?”
Yet God’s Word tells us that all things that now exist will be burned up with fire in the Day of Judgment.
We have God’s alarm clock. Why would we pay attention to the devil’s snooze button? Our spirit man must remain alert every minute of every day.
