Dropping the Rock

Off the Maine coast, the shore is too rocky to enable boats to come all the way in to anchor. To make matters worse, some of the highest tides in the world are found off the northern coast of that wild and windblown state. Anchor in too closely, and when the tide goes out, your boat will be left sitting on the rocks.

Being too close to the shore can be disastrous when boating in Maine.

However, Mainers (as they call themselves) have a solution. Go into deep water and drop a big rock. Then anchor to that. No matter how high the tide rises or how low it falls, when attached to a deep-water mooring, properly anchored boats are safe and secure from the rocky coastline.

God’s Word tells us we have a deep-water mooring for our souls. We have an anchor that we can tie to, one that will keep us safe from the rocky shores of this life.

Hebrews 6:19 tells us:

“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.”

What is that anchor? Jesus. He is the Rock, the Mooring that will never shift, the secure Anchor that we can trust in every occasion. He is the One that will never let us go, and that will hold us securely through every storm.

Hebrews 2:14 reveals how Jesus understands the trials we face:

“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil.”

Jesus was with God, and in his infinite wisdom, he knew he must put himself on our level to truly understand the lives we lead. He has faced our trials. He has endured hunger, betrayal, torture, and a horrendously painful death. He knows the storms that will come our way.

Hebrews 4:15-16 assures us that with Jesus as our anchor, we can live a sinless life through him:

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

When Jesus drops into our lives, he becomes the mooring that cannot be moved. He is our anchor in the time of the storm. The highest of tides and the lowest of tides are no more than ripples on the surface of the sea, for our God knows what will come our way, and he will hold us securely through all situations.

There is no coastline so dangerous that Jesus cannot keep our vessel safe through every storm.
