Dr. God

We are taught that by his stripes we are healed. Yet good health is hard to grasp. Where is God when we are sick?

We read in Jeremiah 8:15 that the people looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

God desires us to be healthy, and that throws the real question back on us. Do we desire us to be healthy? And if so, at what cost?

God’s Word shows us that poor health can be due to a number of reasons, and these reasons fall back on our shoulders. If there is something we can do to correct our situation, then it is not up to God to fix what we have let go.

God’s Word gives us three reasons for poor health.

Reason #1: A Poor Spirit

We have let ourselves slip out of tune with God.

Look in 3 John 1:2. In this passage God tells us, Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.

We love the first part of that verse, but how often do we skip past the second? Before we ask God to heal our bodies, we need to ask him to heal our souls.

Reason #2: Improper Diet

Hamburgers; pizza; ice cream; sodas by the case. It is any wonder we find ourselves under the weather?

Acts 27:34 speaks to this. Paul says, Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health.

Paul is not telling us to eat meat to improve our health. He is telling us to pay attention to what we eat, for a balanced diet will keep us healthy. In the passage in Acts 27, they had eaten nothing good at all, and they had become listless and weak.

Reason #3: Our Attitude

We should not gossip or look with disfavor upon the saints of the Lord. Instead we should think on things that are good and righteous.

We see this in Proverbs 13:7. One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

God couldn’t put it any plainer than in Proverbs 16:24. Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

All through the Word God tells us he wishes us to have good health. In Jeremiah 30:17 he says he will restore health unto us, and he will heal us of our wounds. In Isaiah 58:8 we read that our light shall break forth as the morning, and our health shall spring forth. However, we can see God’s most true heart in Psalms 67:2. He wishes to be known upon all the earth, and if we praise him, he will spread his saving health among all nations.

We should look at our life choices before we pray to God for healing. He does love us and wants us to be healthy. However, his primary desire is to have us worship him. Then he will reach his hand from heaven and heal his people.

We already know the end of the story. Jesus rules, and the devil drools.
