The Cheering Section

On sitcoms, we cue up the laugh track. At a sports event, we put our hands together. In other situations, we can root someone on, inspire a colleague, or even attend a pep rally.

Say it how we want, if we join in, we are part of the cheering section.

What does a cheering section do? We raise the roof, up the ante, and push those who are hesitant down a new track.

We help them blaze a new trail, to go where no man has gone before.

That last phrase comes from Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek television series from the 1960s.

God’s cheering section comes from the time before time existed.

Revelation 1:8 tells us, “ I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’ ”

Colossians 1:16 states, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

John 17:5 relates Jesus’ words, “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”

Psalm 45:6 clarifies God’s timeframe beyond a shadow of a doubt: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.”

With all this, does God even need a cheering section?

Maybe that’s the wrong question. Maybe we should ask this instead:

Does God enjoy a cheering section?

And the answer is, apparently, because he has one in all the angels that inhabit heaven, and in all the saints that have gone before us.

Revelation 19:1 tells of “the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, ‘Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God!’ ”

Revelation 19:4 speaks of “the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures [that] fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, ‘Amen. Hallelujah!’ ”

Revelation 19:6 reveals the “voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, ‘Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.’ ”

Revelation 19:7 says, “Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready.”

So, what was the party all about? Why were they raising the roof?

We are being invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. It’s the end of time as we know it, the rule of Satan over the earth has come to an end, and we will reside with our God in heaven forever more!

Raise the roof! Yah, yah! Cut in the laugh track, and let’s put our hands together! It’s time to rouse the cheering section, and give it all we’ve got!

God enjoys it when we cheer him on.

The more time we spend in the Word and in prayer, the more flavorful we will be to the needy around us.
