Love That Gives All

Giving everything …

Like, every single thing? Try to imagine this: Yes, you can have my music collection. Yes, every song. Or … you want my car? Sure, here are the keys to my truck as well.

Then there’s this scenario: Of course you can empty my pantry into the trunk of your car. Please take the steaks in the freezer, too.

Who does that?

Or, to hit closer to home: Please take my children, too. That one makes us cringe, as it should. We are driven to protect our children at all times, likely with a stronger arm that we would protect ourselves.

Several years ago, a family in a small town just outside Fort Worth, Texas, had a son diagnosed with bone cancer at a young age. His parents taught in the local schools, so they weren’t rich. Over the years, the boy had a leg amputated, yet that didn’t detract from his parents’ determination to give him every chance possible to live his best life ever. While a senior at the local high school, the prognosis turned grim.

The boy’s parents had hoped he would last long enough to at least graduate, but that didn’t happen. They had invested eighteen years in their son and much of their financial resources, and he was lost, anyway. When asked if they would have done things differently if they had known he wouldn’t survive, their answer was, “Absolutely not.”

This is the love of Christ found in John 15:13. When we were found damaged and unable to help ourselves, Christ refused to give up on us.

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends."

When we truly love, no sacrifice is too great. That’s the level of love God demonstrates for his creation.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
