A Game of Christmas Catch

Rick Lauber has fond memories of one Christmas when his dad, an undemonstrative man suffering from advanced dementia, changed up the family’s Christmas Day.

Dinner was over, the turkey gone, and the desserts gobbled down. A young nephew was bouncing a basketball in and around the family members sitting around visiting.

When the ball came near his dad, the elderly gentleman reached out his hand for the roughly textured orange ball. The family watched with bated breath, unsure what would happen.

Rick’s father bounced the ball once, then several more times, then tossed it to another family member, initiating a game of catch that lasted until his father began to tire. Somewhere in his father’s dementia-riddled mind, on that Christmas Day, he had remembered how to play ball.

Dirty dishes finally claimed the moment, but what a memory they now shared!

Our graditude for Christmas is perfectly expressed in 1 Thessalonians 5:18:

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

When we gaze lovingly on a manger scene this year, sing carols at church, or gather around the Christmas tree, let’s take time to thank the Father for his Gift, the Son that came to bring salvation to all mankind.

Excerpt of the Day

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
