What is it about marriage?
How do we select our life mate?
Is it no more than a chemical attraction? The hormones flood our system, and that’s the man or woman for us?
Or is God involved?
Many people believe we have a soul mate. Someone we are ideally matched with who will complete us, finish our sentences, and understand when we struggle with life.
God says he gives us our spouse as our portion in life. The man or woman we marry is our gift from God.
We are not to throw away God’s gift.
Ecclesiastes 9:9 gives us God’s definitive word on the matter:
“Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.”
This passage says your spouse is part of you. They are the person you turn to for enjoyment in your work, in your play, in all the activities of your “vanity” or your life’s pursuits.
Checking out other people isn’t God’s way. We aren’t allowed to “get bored and go a-looking.” We must respect God’s choice and renew our love in the spouse at our side.
If we’re struggling, here are some options.
- Bring flowers.
- Say “I love you.”
- Go out just the two of you.
- Brag on your spouse to someone.
- Find the good in what they do then celebrate it.
Life can be miserable if you let it. You can choose something better. Choose joy and take your spouse along with you.
God has given us our spouse, and we should strive to enjoy our time together.
