Submitted to God

Strength and independence are the bywords of the day.

No one wants to be a wimp. We won’t stand for anyone to kick sand in our face, and never, never, say a bad thing about our momma.

We won’t stand for it, and rightly so. No one should have to endure such abuse.

Yet there are times we must give in. Taxes. We write the check no matter how much we don’t like it. The speed limit applies to everyone. Diet? Must we? That slice of pie will enlarge our pant size if we don’t pass it by.

What does God want us to submit to?

Ephesians 5:21 tells us not to run over our fellow believers even if we disagree with them.

“[Submit] to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Ephesians 4:32 gives Christ as our example in treating others kindly.

“Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Genesis 2:18, 21-22 says God sometimes needs to remove something from us before we’re ready to fit perfectly with the spouse he has for us.

“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’ ... So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.”

1 Peter 3:7 is our commandment to treat our marriage (and our spouse) with the ultimate care and respect, if we want to show we’re submitted fully unto God.

“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

Our strength and independence are outstanding character traits when used properly. When they interfere with our personal relationships, then we’ve valued them too highly. It’s time to put them aside and become vulnerable for love.

Our submission unto God allows us to show love to the people who walk this life at our side.
