Buttressed Against the World

To be on a pedestal is a difficult place to be.

You see, it’s the way the pedestal is constructed. It’s a single piece, with no buttresses to support it. All it takes is a good bump, and down it goes, us with it, to crash to the ground, skinned elbows and all.

Our support buttresses come from the people we love and who love us in return. When we are intertwined with other people, we build a support structure that can stand the test of time.

Ephesians 4:2-3 tells us that relational strength comes from our gentle way of dealing with each other’s shortcomings:

“With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Colossians 3:14 places love as the sturdiest buttress we can build. With it, we are stronger than we can ever be alone:

“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 reveals the asset that comes with two. We find our strength in those at our side:

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?”

Ephesians 5:25 holds up our marriage in the light of Christ’s death on the cross. He died for us. We can afford to do no less for our beloved spouse, if we truly hold him or her in the highest level of love:

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

To stand alone in good times is easy. It’s the wind that tests our spirits, and the waves that batter our souls. Our buttress of protection is found in those who stand at our side, enduring it all with us.

When we stand together, we stand tall in Christ.
