A watchtower is a very useful thing. Called a lookout tower in a forest, it stands above the trees and allows us to spot a fire before it can consume the entire forest. In a crowded airport, it is known as a control tower, and from its height, our eyes can sweep 360 degrees. Along a coastline, we can sight ships when they are still far out at sea.
It is when the fire rages that the lookout tower comes into its own; when the airport is crowded that we appreciate the control tower thrusting into the sky; when the storms rage that we stand in the watchtower and feel reassured.
Our fathers come into their own when life flails at us with teeth bared and fists thrashing, for fathers are the strong towers that keep us safe against all comers. When we draw close to the men who have given us life, their protecting love shelters us from harm.
The Scriptures give us three Watchtower Truths showing how fathers are our strong towers in this life.
Watchtower Truth #1:
A father’s faith provides a strong wall of protection for his children, and his sons shall become strong in the Lord.
Psalms 127:3-5 tells us that a man with many sons is a warrior with a quiver full of arrows. His enemies shall fall at his approach.
When a father raises his sons in the fear of the Lord, they shall draw close to God. If we place God before our children as an example for them to follow, they will one day stand as spiritual watchtowers, and no enemy will be able to prevail against their strong walls.
Watchtower Truth #2:
Our fathers have spiritual eyes that see far and true.
Deuteronomy 1:29-31 reveals how God carries us during those times when we are filled with fear, just as a father carries his son.
When we are in a place of despair, a father’s eyes see what we can’t, for he stands in the control tower of life, surveying all the comings and goings, and he directs those things we cannot see, keeping us safe in everything we do.
In the same way, God’s eyes can see past and future, and he is there for us when we doubt the events that seem to carry us away. We think the enemy is about to overtake us, but God sits in the control tower, and he points the way to victory.
Watchtower Truth #3:
Our fathers are chosen by God, and he uses them to teach the innocent ones.
In Genesis 18:19, God tells us that he chose Abraham, because he knew he would raise his children to keep the way of the Lord.
Our earthly fathers have been selected by God to raise us up to be strong watchtowers for the faith. Hebrews 12:7 lets us know that when our fathers give us hard teachings, it is only God treating us as sons, for all sons are disciplined by their fathers.
Yet again in Proverbs 3:11-12, the Scriptures tell us not to despise God’s instruction, for he disciplines those he considers to be his sons.
He wishes us to become strong watchtowers, for then we can raise up a new generation of warriors to fight in his name.
God gives us fathers to be strong watchtowers in our lives, for they are the ones who will train us up to become strong watchtowers for the Lord.
