There is an old song some of us might remember, where Johnny Lee croons that he’s looking for love in all the wrong places…
We do that, too, and not just in people. Art dealers who sell their morality down the drain to amass an ever larger collection; the antiques dealer who can barely walk through her house; the high-stakes gambler who risks his home and family for one more thrill.
These people are looking for love. We might use phrases like adrenalin junkie or obsessive/compulsive, but the meaning is the same. We are addicted to something that means more than life to us.
Watch a broken-hearted beauty at the end of a bad breakup. We see teary eyes, running makeup, and the wailing…don’t even start on that!
Call an antiques dealer a hoarder and try to sell the stuff off. Don’t be surprised at the teary eyes, running makeup, and the wailing! Did it catch us by surprise?
Love is love, whether for people or for things. Something grabs our hearts, it makes us feel good, and we don’t want to let it go.
What does God’s Word have to say on the matter?
God’s Love Suggestion #1:
If we’re looking for love, that’s well within the will of God. If we find it, then we should sanctify it with marriage. If we don’t find it, don’t sweat it. God can use us so much more fully if we are unfettered by the old ball-and-chain. 1 Corinthians 7:1-30.
God’s Love Suggestion #2:
If we fall in love with the Christ, we have found life. If we fail to find him, we have missed out on the greatest gift God has ever offered mankind. John’s point? We should search for the love of the Father through Jesus his Son. 1 John 5:11-13.
God’s Love Suggestion #3:
We should care for those whom we love as if they are weaker than ourselves. We should honor them before others, for they walk the road of salvation at our side. 1 Peter 3:7.
God’s Love Suggestion #4:
If we choose marriage, we should choose to remain monogamous with our spouse. The marriage bed is not to be defiled. Hebrews 13:4.
God’s Love Suggestion #5:
Do not let rivalry enter into our love of Christ. The Son wished to comfort us all, and in our pursuit of him, we should consider our fellow believers as if they are more important than us. Philippians 2:1-3.
When we’re born, from that moment until the day we die, we are all looking for love. We may become jaded in our search, and love may begin to feel like possession, but take it away, and the feelings are much the same. Pain. Anguish. Need for solace.
There is one to whom we can all look for love, and he has enough to give to everyone. Let’s search for Jesus. He waits with his arms opened wide.
We may be looking for love, but love is also looking for us. When we turn to Jesus, we will find the greatest love of all.
