The Forever Promise

Few things stand the test of time. Stone castles built to withstand the onslaught of war now hunker in the European countryside, their facades crumbling against the ravages of time. The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Wonders of the Ancient World, yet it came crashing down after only 54 years. Even the Great Wall of China exudes barely a remnant of its former glory.

Where is forever, then? We promise our love, and divorce dances in to sweep our happiness away.

What about death and taxes? Are they really forever or simply certain to come?

The crashing waves on the shore are forever, surely. Who can imagine a coastline without water? Yet, scientists are certain the planet Mars once entertained vast oceans, and our Mars landers have found no water at all.

Where is forever, then? Is it a wasted dream, a child’s fantasy? Or is there something there that we can reach out and grasp?

Jeremiah 35:18-19 tells us how to get our hooks into forever and never let it get away from us. The process is simple. It involves three aspects, ones which any man can achieve.

Aspect #1 – Our father’s principles for upright living must become our own.

Aspect #2 – We must make ourselves available to aid our father in his time of need.

Aspect #3 – We must be morally committed to following through on our father’s guidance and instructions.

If we follow these three aspects of obedience, God will speak unto us the very words he spoke unto the house of the Rechabites:

“Because you have obeyed your father, kept all his precepts, and done as he has commanded you, you and your house will stand before me forever.”

God gave the Rechabites his Forever Promise. It would never crumble, never come crashing down, and never be swept away by divorce or changing climates. It was more certain than death and taxes.

We can earn God’s Forever Promise in the same way the Rechabites did. The rules of the game are clearly spelled out in the Scriptures. We must live by our father’s principles, aid him in his need, and never waver from his guidance and instructions. Then, and only then, God will bless us with his Forever Promise.

What is God’s Forever Promise to the modern day Church? Eternal life, of course. An eternity of standing at his side, communing with the Father, and worshipping him in his glory as we stand before his throne.

We don’t have to guess our way to heaven. All we have to do is follow the instructions in the Bible. God has already planned his methods out for us to read. Now is our time to do it.
