A number of years ago, a young mother in Arizona received disastrous news. Her young son had fallen from a roof onto a four foot section of rebar being used as a plant stake.
He was being rushed to the hospital as she was given the horrific news. The rebar had entered his abdomen and pierced his heart, leaving the end protruding underneath the skin just behind his left ear.
She immediately knew the pangs of despair, for in her mind, there was no doubt her son was already dead.
In Mark 5, the ruler of the synagogue received the same news as the mother of that little boy. The ruler’s daughter was dead, and there was nothing he or anyone else could do. Not even the healer the ruler had rushed to on his daughter’s behalf could bring her back from the dead.
However, the healer was Jesus, and he overheard the ruler’s devastating news. In Verse 36, Jesus tells the ruler:
“Don’t be afraid. All you have to do is believe.”
Do we find it all too easy to give up as soon as bad news comes our way? Our medical report says cancer, and we trust the doctor rather than God. Our investment broker talks of a foundering economy, and we stop giving in the offering plate. Our spouse walks out the door, and we wait for the divorce decree to come knocking.
That Arizona mother found herself in the hospital chapel, and she fell to her face before God. Two days later, her son was up and playing video games.
The ruler believed on Jesus, and his daughter was raised from the dead.
Just believe, and we will be made well. Just believe, and we will prosper again. Just believe, and that marriage will be whole.
This is Jesus we’re talking about. All we have to do is believe.
The devil is a liar, but Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Light. We can trust him no matter what news comes our way.
