Split Eight Ways to Nothing

Life keeps us busy. Bobby is at softball practice, Mary has cheerleading, and Dad? Well, Dad’s boss always has extra projects that require him to put in overtime once again. Mom prepares dinner, and when she sets it on the table, she does not want her hard work to be wasted.

How does she gather her loved ones together?

In the days of dairy farms and ranching, chores split family members eight ways to nothing, and they needed a signal to let them know when the next meal was ready. It was the old dinner bell out on the porch that cried out, “Come and get it!”

In the year 595 B.C. Israel found herself split eight ways to nothing. In Jeremiah 50:5, she heard the old dinner bell ring. She turned her face to Zion, and she said, “Let us join ourselves to the Lord in a new covenant that will never end.”

How are we split eight ways to nothing? Have financial pressures drained our pocketbooks? Does contention with a coworker keep us angry every day? Is it commuter traffic that drives us insane?

Do we find it harder and harder to put God first in our lives?

God’s dinner bell rings for us continually. He has a feast of unimaginable proportions prepared at his table, and he has reserved a place for us to dine at his side. When we choose to take time from whatever batters us to seek his face; when we find God’s direction in the truth of his Word; and when we turn our troubles over to him; then we will dine with him on goodness, mercy, and peace.

We will forge a new covenant with God that will never end.

God wishes us to draw unto him that he might become one with us. All we have to do is be there when he calls.

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
