How many times have we returned from an outing to find we forgot to turn a light off or left the garage door up, inviting trouble into our home?
Or perhaps a bill has slipped our memory; we’ve forgotten a birthday; or we’ve had to return to the store to pick up a forgotten item.
We need a way to keep track of the information that floods our lives each day. We might use mnemonics to recall something important, or if we’re technically savvy, we can have our smart phone send us reminders.
God has an easier way. He has a very long string around his finger. When he reaches to untie it, he never wonders what he’s forgotten. His memory is as fresh as the morning dew.
In 1 Samuel 15:1-3 God untied the string of the Amalekites. Years earlier they had lain in wait for Israel when he had come up from Egypt. God decided the time for retribution had come, and he sent Samuel to Saul to remind him that the Lord had anointed him to be king over the children of Israel. That honor included a responsibility to carry out the duties God required of him.
Saul was to destroy all of Amalek. He was not to spare a single man, woman, infant, or animal. All were to be wiped from the face of the earth.
Saul had his own string in this situation, although it was less useful to him than the one God had untied. After Saul defeated the Amalekites, he untied the string on his finger, held it up to the sun, and looked at it with a puzzled expression on his face. Then, instead of following God’s instructions, he returned to Israel with Agag the king and all the best that the Amalekites had possessed.
For his failure to follow God’s instructions, Saul was rejected as king, and Samuel proclaimed that another would take his place.
When we remember what God says to us, we have placed our feet on the road to salvation and eternity spent with the Father. When we forget, we risk being ejected from his holy presence.
