The sun warms our face, and we feel refreshed.
It’s more than that. The brilliance of the sun’s rays gives us life.
We need the sun. The light of our solar companion washes us with unseen substances that our bodies require.
As needed as our celestial life-giver is, it can also cause sunburn, dehydration, and death. The sun is so powerful that we must take care how much exposure we get.
We must walk the shaded path from time to time to stay healthy and energetic. Too much sun is a detriment to our health.
Life is like basking in the sun every day. Being awake, breathing, and interacting with others gives us life. We need it to remain emotionally strong and healthy. Yet, there are times we must retreat to our quiet place, so that we can avoid situation-burn on our hearts and emotions.
Proverbs 20:24 reminds us that we can find our safety in God, even when we don’t understand the world around us.
“A man's steps are from the Lord; how then can man understand his way?”
Romans 8:26-27 is our promise that the Holy Spirit offers direction when confusion overtakes us.
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 requires us to focus on Christ, not the physical world we live in. Our troubles will break us. Christ came to redeem us.
“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
Philippians 2:14-16 says our behavior determines how others see us. If we can be positive in a negative world, we’ve elevated ourselves on our spiritual ladder.
“Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.”
Christ is the towering, leafy bough that offers us solace when the attacks of the world threaten to give us situation-burn. Jesus is our covering that shields us from disaster.
When we can’t take the world’s stress any longer, it’s time to walk for a while with our Lord.
