Running water.
It’s piped into our houses. We know it’s there. We don’t need to keep the faucet running to have confidence it’ll flow freely when we need it. Most of the time we want the stream of water capped so we don’t have an overflow that swamps us.
The point is that when we are connected to the water main, we have access whenever we need it. Just turn the handle, and it flows freely from the spout.
Our connection to God is the same.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 tells us not to worry about our source of life. It’s not going to run out. God will be there in every situation.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
When we trust the flow of God’s love, we understand that all we must do is touch Jesus, and God’s power begins to flow. We have a connection with the Father. Jesus is the one through which the water of life nourishes us.
Let’s look more closely at this verse:
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord.
When we let the worries of life fall away, God’s peace will become ours.
We do not fear when heat comes.
Troubles can buffet us, but we remain joyous through the life flowing from Christ unto us.
We are not anxious in the year of drought.
At times God says, “Take time to enjoy your journey through life. Find pleasure in the creation I’ve provided for you. Sometimes I’m quiet because I want you to be quiet. Trust me to be there when you need me.”
We do not cease to bear fruit.
Even when we don’t feel the Lord’s presence, we must be kind to others, generous in funding God’s work, and faithful to provide for our families.
Trust is an action, one we can perform even when it’s hard. When we are rooted to Jesus, we’ll be nourished in him.
