Anticipation is the name of the game.
It’s what drives the human spirit. On a British home design show, a couple lived for ten years in a one room flat (condo), raising two small children, and dreaming of building a new home. Once their new home was under construction, costs skyrocketed, and their builder went belly-up, sending the project into a tailspin. It would have been easy to give up, but this was a dream a decade in the making. The intrepid couple finished their dream home despite the obstacles that threatened to derail their plans.
Anticipation: Merriam-Webster says it’s the act of looking forward to something; of pleasurable expectation. Like a young couple planning their wedding, or a child on Christmas Eve, we’re giddy with the thought of what might come to pass. It drives us with passion and enthusiasm.
Christians have a victory celebration looming just ahead. We’ll sing and shout at Christ’s return. The world will be blown away by our cheers.
Isaiah 26:17 says:
“Like as a woman with child, who draws near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and cries out in her pangs; so have we been in your sight, O Lord.”
This has been our Christian experience for the past two millennia. The church has been in labor. Yet, in the natural, we remember the joy of holding our children. The birth is forgotten, and we only know the love that we hold in our arms. So it will be when Christ returns. The joy he brings will be our reward for the pain we’ve endured.
Our anticipation for the return of the King drives us forward, even when the devil tries to derail us from our purpose. When we’re excited in Jesus, our problems become small, and we’re filled with him.
When we keep our eyes on Jesus’ return, we’ll have no trouble keeping our faith in him firm.
