The Bible is the written Word of God.
Do we really believe that?
Different denominations have different views on how we are to interpret what we read. Are the passages literal, word for word, inspired by the almighty God? Or should we look for truths in the stories, hopefully finding life-affirming principles we can apply to our lives, rather like those in fables and parables?
Or can we read the Word as a missive penned by the Savior’s hand and written just for us?
1 Peter 3:15 reflects the gentle nature of the Christ:
“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”
Romans 1:1 suggests the life of Christ is to be our example, for we should be different than those who don’t believe:
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God.”
Exodus 14:14, from the Old Testament, reveals the power of our Risen Lord:
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
1 Timothy 1:1 places God’s call on our lives as coming directly from heaven above:
“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope.”
How do we interpret the Bible? Through faith, prayer, and trust in the Father. When we read with an open mind, we’ll find the words of Christ will flow through the scriptures, and we’ll find meaning in that ancient text that will be new and fresh, and applicable even in our modern world.
Christ still speaks to us through the Word when we open our hearts unto him.
