Are we afraid of the dark? Does a midnight walk make our skin crawl? When we open our eyes in bed, and the blackness surrounds us, does fear make our heart pound?
Our answer for most of these should be, “Not really.” When we feel secure, darkness isn’t an issue. If our neighborhood is safe, taking a late-night stroll hand-in-hand is a relaxing break before turning in to bed. The shadows filling our bedroom are welcome, because we get to fall asleep. We aren’t afraid, because we’re familiar with our world, and we feel safe.
It’s when the world is in turmoil that the shadows fill us with fear. Isaiah 13:10 reveals the Coming Day of the Lord’s Judgment:
“For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.”
Are we afraid of the dark? The only reason to be filled with foreboding over this prophesy is if we’re unfamiliar with Christ as our Lord and King. He is the illumination that shines in the darkness. He is the one who dispels the shadows. He is the bright and morning star. He is the light upon the hill that draws the world to him. He is our source of confidence and our constant companion. He is our rock in the time of storm and our ever-present champion. In his presence, there is no impending storm that can destroy us, no disaster able to to overtake us, and no mountain we cannot climb.
With Christ at our side, we can take all the midnight walks we desire. He will light our footsteps, and he will be the glow of truth amid the shadows of sin. In him, we will find our way home every time.
Jesus is our flashlight. When we walk in his light, we’ll never stumble and never fall, no matter where he asks us to go.
