Galilee is one of the most beautiful places on the eastern border of the Mediterranean.
In the time of Jesus, it was ruled by one of Herod’s sons. It was a hotbed of social dissent and economic protest, perhaps even social banditry, as exhibited by Judas the Galilean and the Egyptian, a man with no other name who had magical powers and an enormous following among the people.
Galilee was also the land of one of Jesus’ most well-known miracles.
John 2:1-12 tells of Jesus’ first miracle:
“On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ ”
The story goes on, telling of the water brought to Jesus, and the wine that was better than that served at the start.
Cana was a land of miracles, one that started with a simple wedding, and grew into the movement we know today as Christianity. It was Jesus’ first time to publically use his miraculous power and show his divinity to the world.
Cana can be ours. The miracle of Christ can live in us.
Isaiah 55:1 tells us of our invitation:
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”
To find our heart in Cana is to live in the miraculous power of Jesus, and to exist in his presence day by day.
Will we give in to the world, to be subjugated by the modern-day Herods of our entertainment industry and our new social order; or will we rise in dissent against the sin and moral banditry the world tries to foist upon us? Let’s plant our flag in Cana, for where we establish our heart is where we’ll find our home.
It doesn’t matter where we live. If Jesus is in our heart, that is where we belong.
