We see things differently when we’re at the sea.
The waters calm us when the winds are gentle, and in the thrashing storm, we see a power greater than we are. We sense the awesomeness of our almighty God, and we cower before his majesty. We gain a sense of who we are when we spend time along the shore.
Some people like to walk the sand or gaze into the waves, mesmerized by the eternal nature of the watery colossus trying to crawl ashore, forever held in check by the hand of God. Others enjoy being cast aloft on the waves, surfing or on a personal watercraft.
We learn of God when we’re at the sea.
Matthew 13:1-58 is a long passage revealing some of Christ’s most intimate teachings. Yet the lessons begin with something very familiar.
“That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things…”
Jesus knew his listeners would see things differently at the sea. They would sense the awesomeness of his Father, and his words would become real to them.
We can trust in God when we’re at the sea.
Luke 8:22-25 tells of a time Jesus was at sea with his disciples. Verse 24 is our focus.
“And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we are perishing!’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.”
When life’s storms rage, and we see no way out, God speaks, and the storms cease. He is the one we can trust in every situation.
When we allow ourselves to see things differently, we will find the truth that is our God, and we will learn to trust in him in every situation.
