Rain falls everywhere.
We can’t choose to have the water fall on this field, and yet see the sun shining over there. When the skies cast their bounty on the earth, it comes where it will.
In 2008 a travel documentary followed two hosts across Canada. Their destination after a long day’s drive was a prized fishing location on a beautiful river. As they drew close, water began to run in rivulets across their windshield. When they pulled up, with the river in their sights, the sky opened up.
One host remarked to the other, “It’s clearing. I can feel it.” The rain only fell harder, trapping them in their vehicle.
We can’t control the rain. We like to say it’s a gift from God, but it doesn’t feel that way when it gets in the way of what we want to do.
Does God get in our way sometimes? He showers us with goodness, but not when and where we want, and we say, “Once this clears, I can do what I want.”
The rain falls where it will, and God’s goodness comes at his discretion. Sometimes it matches up with our desires, but often it does not.
John 3:16 tells us God rained his Son on the earth. Man wasn’t ready. They wanted to do their own thing, not accept the truth of the Christ, and they killed him to get him out of the picture.
Genesis 1:27 says we are made in the image of God, yet man wallows in the filth of degradation. We want what we want, and we overlook what we see in the mirror. We are made in the image of the almighty Creator of all things.
2 Timothy 2:15 gives us a better way. Rather than rail against the rain, we should learn to accept it so that we can present ourselves to God unashamed, because we have lived in the truth of his Word.
The blessings of God may not be the ones we lay out before him in prayer. He may choose to gift us his love in one way, and we only see it as rain keeping us from doing what we want. The truth is that God’s rain is necessary for life, and we need to learn to revel in his goodness no matter when it falls from the sky.
When we desire God’s blessings, we must be ready for what he sends our way.
