Think of the fragile butterfly. He can’t compete with the wind, for in any gale, he will be tossed about like fluff in a clothes dryer. He has no weapons to ward off his attackers. If something wants to eat him, the butterfly will get eaten.
Who would want to be a butterfly?
Yet, we consider the butterfly one of God’s most beautiful creatures. We envy its delicate colors, and when these ephemeral motes of brightly-colored dust happen into our gardens, we ooh and ah as if we’ve never seen anything so beautiful.
Who wouldn’t want to be a butterfly?
Do we wonder how God sees us? He is the great Almighty that lives forever, and we are the butterflies caught in the storm. We are no more than fluff in a dryer in comparison to him.
Yet, God considers us to be his most beautiful creation, and when we show up at his feet, he reaches out to us as if he’s never seen anything so beautiful.
Who wouldn’t want to be us?
Let’s look at how our God cups us in his hand as he smiles at us:
Ezra 8:21 says, “I proclaimed a fast, at the river Ahava…to seek from [God] a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods.”
There is no storm that can blow us off course when we have God’s hand over us. We might be a butterfly in a turbulent world, but God is really big, and his hand encompasses all that surrounds us.
James 5:13 assures us, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.”
It doesn’t matter which way the wind blows. We will always wind up in God’s garden, and we will have the pick of his flowers for sustenance.
Luke 2:37 speaks of a widow at eighty-four who “did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.”
When we gather in God’s garden, we will feast on his riches continually. We can make anything we do and anyplace we visit a temple to the Lord. It’s all in our attitude of worship.
So, what about those times when the winds still blow, and the butterfly of happiness is still tossed by the winds? In Luke 18:1, Jesus gives us the answer to that. “And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.”
A butterfly is made to take to wing. When God created these beautiful concoctions, he knew the storms would come. He also knew the storms would end, and the flower gardens would be waiting.
Our flower garden is just ahead. If we stretch our wings and let God cup his hands around us, we will dine in his presence forevermore. We will become the butterfly of happiness.
Think about that. After all, when we look at life this way, who wouldn’t want to be us?
When the storms blow, they always carry us into the arms of the Father.
