Blinded by Belief

A blizzard can blind someone even though his eyes can see just fine. How? The snow swirls so violently that it obscures the truth. No matter how certain a man is that he is headed toward warmth and safety, his steps can lead him to certain death.

For a cave diver, it is the same. When silt on the bottom of an underground lake or river is disturbed, and it swirls around the diver, she can no longer discern up and down. She can know beyond a doubt that she is going the correct direction to get out, yet die when her air is depleted.

In the spiritual world, it is the same. People often know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are walking in truth, and they don’t understand that the snow of material possessions has blinded them, the silt of the devil’s lies has filled the water, and they are going the wrong direction. They only know what they wish to know, for they have been blinded by their belief in what they think they know, rather than in what the Word of God tells them.

Take the Israelites as they ran from the Egyptians. God showed them miracle after miracle in Egypt, then he pressed the waters of the Red Sea aside so that they could walk through on dry ground.

Yet they did not see with their eyes, for the snow of greed had swirled around them, blinding their sight, and the silt of their physical circumstances had been stirred by their lack of understanding.

Deuteronomy 1:32-33 berates their unbelief, for Moses says:

“Yet in this thing you did not believe the Lord your God, who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in a cloud by day.”

God had stood in front of his people and shouted his presence with miracles and a visual presence. Yet, they held tightly to their Egyptian beliefs. After 400 years in Egypt, they were blinded by their belief. When God got in their face and said, “Here am I,” they could not see him for who he was.

How do we let ourselves be blinded by our belief? Do we see our empty cupboards and believe God cannot provide food? When our checkbook runs dry, do we see our lack of funds as inescapable and feel abandoned by God? When our child gets cancer, do we accept the inevitable, rather than turning to the healing hand of God?

Do we let ourselves be blinded by our belief in the world around us? Or do we break the devil’s bonds and stretch our hands toward heaven, calling upon God to rescue us from our troubles?

He will, you know. He stands beside us, his miracles held out in one hand, and the evidence of his presence in the other. Once we choose to see him, we will find his presence in every moment of every day.

God stands at our side all the time. It is up to us to acknowledge his presence. Then he can pour his blessing out on us.

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
