Electricity has changed the fabric of our world.
If you don’t understand that statement, have the electricity go off for a day . . . or two.
Ice storms often take down power lines and leave people in the dark for weeks. So do hurricanes. Powerful winds topple power poles, and no electricity can reach our homes.
We’re in the dark, our fridges don’t work, and there’s no way to heat our water.
We can’t even drive into the garage without getting out of our car and opening it from the inside.
About the third night, when our battery-powered gadgets begin to run down, we lie in bed, overwhelmed by the quiet, and we wonder how we will survive until the power comes back on.
We’re trapped in the darkness, and we yearn for the light.
That’s man’s spiritual condition without the saving grace of God. Ephesians 5:11 reveals our initial gleam of hope.
“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”
Our job as Christians is to be the spark that illuminates the darkness. We’re to speak the truth of God’s Word and beat back the oppression of the evil one.
Here’s some ways we can share the light.
- Tell someone about your life before Christ and how he’s changed you.
- Ask a spiritually leading question, such as, “What do you think the Church’s viewpoint might be?”
- Carry a keychain or wear a bracelet with pictures of Christian activities. Share the story behind them when people notice.
- Cut a neighbor’s grass and offer them a tract about Jesus or take time to give them your Christian witness.
It’s not hard. Christ was the spark that erupted into a flame of salvation that burned across the world. We can all become part of the light that banishes the darkness. We do it one small kindness at a time.
Christ lighted the darkness, and we can, too.
