Pick Your Poison

God is all about choice.

We laugh, and we imagine the Great White Throne Judgment that happens just before the lost are thrown into the lake of fire. God sits with a firebrand in his hand, and those who haven’t come to him are cast aside.

Choice? We really have that?

Of course. Choice is a reality of life.

On Facebook, a man posted an image with this sentence on it: The first time was a mistake. The second time was a choice.

That friend who moans, “Why do all the men I date seem to be losers?” The first might have been a mistake. All the rest were choices.

The spouse who goes over the limit on yet another credit card. The first time we can overlook. All the rest? The spending didn’t happen by accident.

The Christian who falls into sin once again…get the picture?

We pick our poison, and it’s up to us to live with it.

Read of this example in Matthew 13:3-8:

“A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil…”

We don’t need to read the rest of the story, because we know it so well. It’s the parable of the sower. The seeds were all the same, but the types of soil were very different. Only the seeds that fell on fertile soil grew to produce good grain.

What type of soil are we? We get to choose.

When we console someone in their grief, do we simply commiserate, or do we share the love of Christ?

When temptation comes our way, do we indulge, or do we walk away?

When God impresses us to share our blessings, do we close our checkbook, or is our pen already in motion?

It’s all about choice. We get to pick our poison. We get to choose God each and every time.

When we keep our eyes on God, it’s easy to avoid the world and choose Christ the first time.
