Turn Around to Come Around

Many years ago a destitute miner found an abandoned claim. There was a small cabin to the side of a stream, and just up the hillside, an entrance was cut into the soil leading deep into the earth. The mine was played out, so it was said, but the cabin was solid, and winter was on its way.

For the price of filing a new claim on the abandoned property, the miner now had a home for the winter. It wasn’t much, but it would be warm, and he could move on in the spring. The real riches weren’t in the abandoned mine. They were over the next ridge, just waiting to be discovered.

That winter, however, was a long one, and at one point, the miner began to explore the old mine. Chipping away at a back wall in a side shaft, he noticed a glimmer. He began to work the section, pulling away rock and dirt, and he slowly exposed a solid vein of silver ore.

He was rich! Yet, he wasn’t, either. The silver was just ore in a hole in the ground. It might be his, but it was worthless as long as all he did was stand and admire it in the ground. He had to turn around from that cave wall and give his riches away for it to become spendable cash to him.

He needed to make a trade, his silver for everything else the world had to offer.

God gives us riches every day. Life, air to breathe, and even the food on our tables. What do we do with our riches, sit and admire them, or give them away in trade for everything that is good and right?

1 Corinthians 11:24 tells us that Jesus said, “Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you.”

Our riches, what are they? Silver and gold. Our time. Our professional expertise. Jesus shared his life with humanity so that we could benefit from his riches. What can we share so that others can benefit from us?

That miner? He had to turn around and walk from that mine with his silver in his hands, or he had nothing at all. If he had hoarded his silver, he’d still be living in a pauper’s cabin, hoping to find a better life just over the next ridge.

Let’s share God’s blessings. They’ll come back to us just when we need them, enriching us as we walk with the Father.

We already know the end of the story. Jesus rules, and the devil drools.
