There is no one version of history. Different countries create their own histories, and then often rewrite them to suit their own designs. Yet, all versions tell the same set of historical events.
The four Gospels in the New Testament are the same. Each tells one version of the life of Christ.
In John 1:41 Simon Peter’s brother says, “We have found the Messiah.”
Who had found the Messiah? Andrew.
In the Old Testament there were many prophecies of Jesus’ coming. However, no one, not even the disciples, believed their risen king, the Messiah, was a spiritual messiah. They all believed he was coming to reinstate the worldly supremacy of Israel’s golden age.
Andrew was the one who first who recognized Jesus’ real purpose was a spiritual one.
In John 6:5 Jesus asks, “Where shall we find food to feed the crowd?” The question was totally rhetorical, for he knew the answer already. However, the two replies he received were totally different.
Phillip says, “Master, to buy food for all these would be too expensive.”
Andrew brings a boy to Jesus and says, “Here is a lad with two loaves and five fishes.”
Who had the most faith?
In John 12, did Phillip take the Greeks to Jesus? No. After all, the Jews were a people set apart, and the Messiah had come for the Jews. So, Phillip shifted the question to someone else. He searched out Andrew, and Andrew took the Greeks to Jesus.
Andrew recognized that Jesus had come to the entire world, not just to the Jews.
So, why is Andrew so important? It is the lesson he teaches us.
In the three times we read of Andrew speaking, he did only one thing. He brought people to Jesus.
First, he brought Peter to Jesus.
Next, he brought the boy with the loaves and fishes to Jesus.
Last, he brought the Greeks to Jesus.
There are four histories of Jesus’ life in the New Testament, each telling a different man’s version of the events surrounding the coming of the Messiah. Andrew wrote nothing at all. Instead, he acted. He brought people to Jesus.
Andrew was a man after God’s own heart.
God doesn’t expect everyone to play a starring role in his great plan. He only wants us to bring people to him. Jesus will do the rest.
