The phrase “turn on” has multiple meanings. The one we want to address today is “to use,” as in turn on the light, turn on the stove, or turn on the breaker.
We get the same meaning from hit, ignite, or flip as in hit the light, ignite the stove (if we have gas), or flip the breaker.
They mean the same, to put something into action, to put it to the use for which it was created.
Now let’s turn to the Bible. Why was it created? Other than to tell a good story, why did God place it in our hands?
Let’s look to Psalm 119:9-11 for that answer.
“How can a young man (or woman!) cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
Let’s pull out four ways we can “turn on the Word” to help us live a better, brighter, more productive Christian life.
Our 1st Way to Turn On the Word: Pay attention to what the Bible says.
“By taking heed according to Your word.”
We must read the Word to know what the Word says. Start a devotion time or a Bible study.
Our 2nd Way to Turn On the Word: Seek God with every part of who we are.
“With my whole heart I have sought You.”
Each time we face a difficult situation, consider what God would want you to do. We find the answer through prayer and in the study of the Word.
Our 3rd Way to Turn On the Word: Align our lives with the commandments in the Bible.
“Oh, let me not wander from your commandments!”
We know the Ten, but Jesus said the most important is to care about the people around you as much as you care about yourself.
Our 4th Way to Turn On the Word: Memorize scripture so that we can recall it during stressful times.
“Your word I have hidden in my heart.”
What’s in our heart (or our head) becomes part of how we live. The more we read, the more we remember, and what we remember becomes who we are.
Let’s turn on the Word in our lives today. Open the Book and get started!
