Doing It God’s Way

A number of years ago, Burger King presented a new slogan.

Have It Your Way

The new slogan illustrated the emphasis on individuality prevalent at the time. They would retain it as a successful commercial catchphrase for over 40 years.

Burger King dropped the slogan in 2014, in favor of an updated version more in tune with the times. They were leapfrogging from the old to the new to build better rapport with their target audience.

The church can take a lesson from Burger King. We need to leapfrog from “doing it our way” into “doing it God’s way.”

Jesus set the standard for our “updated us” in Matthew 26:42:

“Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, ‘My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.’ ”

This prayer was about the cross, about crucifixion, about the stripes he would bear for our healing. We see Jesus’ way. He wants God to offer him another choice. We also see his acceptance of his Father’s plan: “Your will be done.”

It’s normal, human, even, for us to want what pleases us. In essence, to “have it our way.” We want to ditch the “no pain, no gain” scenario. Give us roses along the way, blue skies, and even butterflies. That would be nice, God. Can you see to it?

And then God says, “Here’s my plan. Are you onboard?”

As Jesus prayed, “Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”

Amen, nothing left to be said.

When God’s path seems rough, let’s hike up our hems and get started!

Jesus is our number one authority, and the only thing he tells us to do is love one another.
