We are all familiar with the tragic story of the Titanic.
Luxury ship on her maiden voyage, big iceberg, SMASH! Story over.
A 2017 study on what really caused the sinking of the Titanic revealed much more to the story.
The captain who wouldn’t slow the ship in an ice field? The reality is that the Titanic launched during a coal strike. It took additional fuel to slow the ship and restart the engines. They were in danger of running out of coal.
An unsinkable ship … not exactly. The ship’s designers recommended a higher grade of steel for the hull to withstand the rigors of being at sea. Bruce Ismay, the head of the White Star Line, said the cheaper steel was good enough.
The Titanic was on fire throughout her maiden voyage. The coal stores spanned three stories. The coal began to smolder before she left Southampton, and the crew was unable to put it out. Fire weakens steel … a disaster waiting to happen.
When the Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, was accidentally hit by HMS Hawke, a Royal Navy cruiser, in 1911, the steel hull of the Olympic peeled back like an apple … the same as the Titanic only a year later.
James 4:8 says:
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
We have three lessons we can take from this.
Lesson No. 1:
We must be fueled with the Word of God. Lack of scripture can cause us to head into dangerous territory.
Lesson No. 2:
We cannot afford to choose the easier option. Our standards must be the highest possible.
Lesson No. 3:
We must extinguish the fires of sin. They will weaken our resistance to evil, and we will fail to stand against the world.
God wants to be our rescuer. He holds out his hands to us and offers us a life jacket today. It’s called the Word, and through it, we can enjoy salvation through Christ our Lord.
Place your faith in Jesus. He can bring you spiritual life today.
