We all enjoy an invitation to a good meal. Eating is part of our body’s survival mechanism. Reactions are triggered in our brain, and a sense of pleasurable satisfaction surges through us. We want to feel that rush of pleasure over and over again.
God gives us an invitation to Wisdom’s banquet, and all we have to do is send our RSVP. Let’s read about Wisdom’s provisions of plenty in Proverbs 9:1-21.
Wisdom has built herself a dining hall of seven pillars. Seven is God’s perfect number, and wisdom is God’s perfect gift to mankind.
Wisdom has sent out a call to tell all the earth that her table is furnished, and her meal is prepared. The menu is that of God’s redemptive plan through Jesus Christ.
Wisdom invites the lost to come to her table. If we turn from the foolishness of the world, we will eat of her provisions, and we will gain great understanding.
Wisdom’s appetizer cautions us to ignore those who scorn the message of Christ, for it is those who live by the Word that desire to gain ever greater wisdom. Those who disparage God’s work will only hate our rebuke and turn their anger toward us.
Wisdom’s first course fills us up with knowledge, for when we fear the Lord, the foundation stones of the knowledge of Christ are already under our feet. When we gain knowledge of the Holy One through his Word, we have the beginnings of wisdom in our grasp.
Wisdom’s main dish offers to multiply our days and increase our years. This does not mean God will add years to our life. Rather, it gives us hope for fullness of life and meaningful time spent in the service of the Lord’s work.
Wisdom finishes her banquet with the finest of desserts. Her ultimate offering is the assurance that the wisdom we gain from Christ is a personal gift, bequeathed to us alone. However, she cautions, if we scorn the gift of Christ, we will bear the entirety of our rejection, with no one to share our blame.
Wisdom is laid out for us as a gift of monumental proportions. All we have to do is dine on the knowledge of the Lord, and we will become full.
