Getting God Into Our Head

Gooey cupcakes are not an ideal dessert.

We never want to cut our casserole to discover it’s not cooked all the way through. Runny ice cream? Undone eggs? How about bread that didn’t rise when we put it in the oven?

We also cannot leave our relationship with the Lord half done.

Psalm 119:38 falls in a passage devoted to understanding our walk with the Lord.

“Stablish your word unto your servant, who is devoted to your fear.”

This verse is best understood when broken down into four parts.

Stablish your word.

All understanding of God comes through the Bible. If we want to know God, we must read his Word.

Unto your servant.

We will only understand God’s Word when our heart is devoted unto him. The unbeliever will only read the words and never understand God.

Who is devoted.

Our desire for God must supersede all other driving forces in our daily walk. We must be willing to set things aside to follow him.

To your fear.

The fear of the Lord is our respect for the position he holds in creation. He controls all the keys, and he opens all the doors. He can close them, too.

The rephrasing of this verse from The Message gives new light to its meaning:

“I choose the true road to Somewhere, I post your road signs at every curve and corner.”

When we walk with God, let’s pay attention to the lives of our spiritual predecessors. Where they stumbled, let’s be strong. Where they found strength, let’s walk that path.

We must become the example for those who come after us. We must help them Stablish the Word of God into their hearts.

When we get God fully into our head, we’ll find his love for others flowing through our hands.
