Humans are an independent group.
From our earliest childhood, the world revolves around us. It’s only as we begin to mature that we send out connectors that bond us to the people around us. Our dad makes us pancakes on Sunday mornings, and we learn to treasure our time with him. Our mom kisses us goodnight just before she turns out the light, and we depend on her presence.
Still, we are an independent people. Individually, our waking hours are centered on us. Others can feel important, but the core of who we are resides in our feelings, our hopes, and our emotions. Our actions are designed to bring us the best life experience possible. We listen to our inner voice that says me, me, me.
We all have one.
Sometimes it tells us life is all about us. It’s why we hear parents say to their children, “Don’t you listen to a word I say?” Other times it tells us we’ll receive more love from others if we let them have their way. Then we continue to give, even when we are abused in return.
There’s another voice we should consider. It speaks to us, also. It has a message for us that can move us from a slippery footing as we walk through life to the solid rock that will lead us safely home. Read in Proverbs 15:5:
“A fool despises his father’s instruction: but he who regards reproof is prudent.”
What father are we talking about, here? Our earthly father? Of course. The meaning goes deeper, however. Our Father in heaven constantly tugs at our thoughts with his instructions. Some call it a conscience. Others say it’s a still, small voice. It’s been described as the whisper of the wind and the urging in the night. However we describe the voice of the Father, if we attempt to override his words of wisdom with fast behavior, loud friends, and raucous partying, we’ll never find our peace. Our only path to spiritual security is to turn loose of our independence and let the Father’s words guide us through the troubles of everyday life.
God speaks to us through prayer, reading the Bible, and godly teaching from a good, scripturally based church. Oh, yeah, that conscience thing? It’s a pretty good guide, too.
When the Father speaks to us, if we want to be wise, we’ll do well to listen.
