Checking Our Trust Meter

Real estate contracts, car titles, or credit card applications.

We sign contracts for a reason. It’s a matter of trust. Are we truly who we say we are? Are we representing ourselves properly, and will we do the thing we’ve said we’ll do?

It’s the reason we have laws, police, and detention facilities. Some people fail on the trust meter. They can’t manage to keep from crossing over into others’ personal spheres of safety and privacy.

It’s the same reason we have border security when traveling from one country to another. We can’t always trust those who want to live among us.

How about our spiritual trust meter? How are we doing there? When we come to Christ, we’re to put our trust in him. Jeremiah 17:5 tells us:

“Thus says the Lord; Cursed be the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from the Lord.”

Our alliance needs to be with Christ. Our manual of operations is the Bible. Our trusted advisors need to be our pastors, Sunday school teachers, and our faithful saints of the church.

Are we truly who we say we are, Christians, faithful to the teachings of Christ and the examples given to us in the Word? Our trust meter is pegged either high or low by the jokes we tell, the movies we watch, our offerings on Sunday mornings, and the company we keep on Saturday night. If we treasure time with our Lord, we’ll find our thoughts become focused on him, and we’ll become what he wants us to be.

When we check our spiritual trust meter, let’s make sure it reads all the way on the side of Christ.
