When humans are hot, we can cool off in various ways: remove layers of clothing, find shade, perspire, or simply drink something cool.
The cool water lowers our temperature internally, and we begin to feel cooler on the outside.
Cooling off is why a dog and some other animals pant. It’s a way of lowering their temperature internally so they’ll feel cooler on the outside.
Psalm 42:1 tells us:
“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.”
Habakkuk 3:19 reminds us:
“God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places.”
Sometimes Christians try the world’s methods of dealing with stress and problems. We reserve a table at the newest restaurant, or we plan a trip to an amusement park. We whip out our credit card and head to the mall. That new dress makes us feel good for a time. A game of golf with the latest clubs is a morale booster. Yet, when we slip our new purchases into the closet, we feel no better than before.
We need internal cooling. We need that drink of cool water. We need to pant after Christ as the deer pants for flowing streams. We need to want Christ so much that we’ll forgo eating or sleeping to fill up on him.
Our satisfaction in God comes on the inside, not from experiences or things money can buy. He will satisfy our thirst, when we fill up on him.
Getting Jesus inside of us helps the outside of us to become more like him.
