Mixing It Up

Being fixated on one thing isn’t good for us. If all we eat is ice cream, we’re not a healthy individual. There are nutrients we need we can only get from other foods.

How about television? Watching only comedies makes Jack a very dull boy. We’ll have a good time, but throw us in a discussion on science matters, and we’ll be out in the cold.

Vacations are the same. If all we do is visit the beach, we’ll never know the beauty of the mountains. We won’t know the joy of the snow, and we’ll miss the night life of New York and other large cities.

We need to mix it up. We need to be multi-faceted for the Lord. 1 Timothy 6:6 reveals two sides God wants us to display to the world.

“But Godliness with contentment is great gain.”

To get the most from our Christian walk, this brief verse carries two important truths.

Truth No. 1:

We should practice Godliness on a regular basis. How can we know what Godliness looks like? We have to study the Word of God to learn the nature of our Lord. We can read of Jesus’ life and incorporate his style of living into our own. Get a good Red Letter Edition of the Word and practice the responses Jesus gave to the people around him. Learn his ways. Live his ways.

Truth No. 2:

Contentment is vital to our walk with Christ. This is different than complacency. Merriam-Webster describes complacency as “unconcerned” or satisfied with the status quo. Contentment is very different. When we’re content, we’ve “appeased our desires” until we are satisfied we’re the best we can be.

The real truth we must face centers on the desires we harbor inside. Do we desire to be like the world, with ever more showy houses, cars, and vacations? Or do we desire Christ to be predominate in every action we undertake?

How about if we paraphrase 1 Timothy 6:6 like this:

“The best life we can live is to want to be like Jesus so much that we don’t stop until we have copied him in every way.”

If we follow that instruction, we will be caught up in remolding our every moment into the perfect reflection of Christ as he reflected God in his time on this earth. Let’s do it. Let’s mix it up. Let’s put God into every part of our day.

When we wear the whole will of God, we change in every single way.
