Three Important Things

Life is in the details.

We’ve all heard that, but sometimes the details can distract us from what’s really important. We get so wrapped up in the moment that we forget we have a bigger plan we’re supposed to be paying attention to.

Finances is one example. We want the new shoes, the fancy dress ones, and in our desire to have them, we forget about our daughter’s birthday next month. Or maybe it’s that 60-inch television. We can’t live without it in spite of the fact that our bills are already tight.

Sometimes it’s our families. Little Jimmy has stepped on our last nerve, and we yell at him, overlooking the fact that he’ll never forget the cruel things we say. Or little Mary wants to help with the cooking, and we refuse, not wanting her to slow us down. We simply don’t have the patience.

What’s the big picture we’re not seeing? What are these details getting in the way of?

Important Thing #1:

Hebrews 10:19-22 tells us nothing is more important than placing our faith in Christ.

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”

Important Thing #2:

Romans 14:1-4 says to be generous with those who walk at our side.

“As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.”

Important Thing #3:

Isaiah 1:16 makes it personal, telling us that, indeed, life in Christ is in the details.

“Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil.”

Life is full of small moments that can distract us. If we want to enjoy every minute of every day, we have to grasp onto the bigger image of what our lives are about. We have to place our trust in Christ before everything else, remember to be kind to others, and hold ourselves to the holy standards of Christ. Then, each detail that clutters up our days will be a gift from God, and we will treasure each and every one.

When we pay attention to Christ, everything else becomes better because of him.
