Cautioned by God

Warning signs are there for a purpose.

Fallen Rocks. We understand that one. There might be a serious obstruction in our way, and we need to be alert to the danger.

Hot Surface. That, too, is perfectly clear. Touch, and we’ll burn our fingers. Lay something against it, and it may burn our house down.

This May Cause Cancer. Sometimes we look at this one askance. Cancer? That’s something in the distant future. Why worry about it now?

Underwater Drop-off. We feel free to ignore this one. After all, we’re on the surface, and it’s beautiful. What do we care what goes on where we can’t see?

What about God’s warnings? How seriously do we take them?

Read the second half of Jeremiah 47:4:

“For the Lord will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.”

There are three important truths we can pull from this verse:

One, God will move against those who sin against him. We cannot disregard his truths and expect to remain unscathed.

Two, mankind has no recourse against the mighty power of the Almighty. God’s slightest wish will wash us aside in a torrent of unimaginable proportions.

Three, God desires no one to suffer the wrath of his judgment. He wishes all to repent and be saved. Jeremiah’s words were the opportunity for the inhabitants of Philistia to flee the upcoming destruction, if any desired to do so.

We laugh at the idea of someone driving their car into a boulder directly on the freeway. Only a fool would lean against a hot surface and burn himself. Lung cancer? After years of ingestion, people deserve what they get. And that underwater drop-off? What are we doing there in the first place?

Why then are we surprised by the calamities brought on by the judgments of the Father? In his Word, we’ve already been cautioned by God.

It’s about time we started listening.

God’s Word gives us plenty of opportunities to change our ways. It’s up to us to heed the warning signs.
