A Short Time of Glory

Some things are inherently temporary.

That new car smell. It’s there, it’s potent, and if we’ve driven a new car, we know it at a whiff.

Companies manufacture “new car” sprays to enhance the sale of used vehicles. What is the new car smell actually? It’s the off-gassing from chemicals used to produce the car.

Our first rush of love. It blinds us to all else. We ignore bills, work schedules, and we take risks we wouldn’t consider at any other time.

Businesses monopolize on this because it slips away from us very quickly. Love at first sight is less love than infatuation. We have to shore up love’s foundations in order for it to last.

Christmas morning. We arise early, and the sounds of excited children fill the house. Wrapping paper covers the floor, and it’s all about having fun.

Sales at Christmas are what keep many businesses afloat the rest of the year. After spending all our cash, we smile and choose to ignore our gritty eyes and flat wallets. Yet, if we had to do it every week, we’d soon come to dread the day.

So why do we chase the thrill of sin even after the first rush of excitement wears off?

Jeremiah 25:12 tells us:

“Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the Lord, making the land an everlasting waste.”

God eventually tires of man’s wayward ways. He and he alone is eternal, the secure source of life, and our permanent rock of everlasting holiness. His glory never fades, no matter how many times we come into his presence.

Living our lives isn’t about temporary sensual experiences. Certainly the occasional new car, that first teenage crush, and the fun of Christmas make life more enjoyable, but walking with Christ is so much more.

The initial excitement of receiving our salvation must become grounded in prayer and the Word, or it will slip away from us in the wear and tear of daily living.

We mustn’t trade our eternal inheritance for a short time of glory mired in the muck of the world.
