What’s in Our Moneybag?

We want to be empowered. It’s become something of a theme in our modern society. Girl Power. Power Rangers. Flower Power. Power of Positive Thinking. Staying Power. Power Hitter. Power Up. Power Down. Power Play. Knowledge Is Power.

It would seem that we want power in our moneybag. Why in our moneybag? That’s easy. A moneybag is where we carry our most valuable things. A moneybag is where we keep our power.

In fact, the Word of God speaks to our moneybag in Luke 22:36:

“But now let the one who has a moneybag take it…”

However, what God wants in our moneybag is not always what the world tells us to put inside. Let’s see what God has to say.

Romans 12:19 says to take Power Plays out of our moneybag:

“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ ”

Matthew 26:52 tells us we should Power Down rather than Power Up:

“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword…’ ”

Matthew 5:38-39 reveals the gentleness of Flower Power:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

Matthew 5:1-2 assures us that Knowledge Is Power:

“Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them…”

Matthew 4:1-4 tells us where the Power of Positive Thinking comes from:

“Then Jesus…answered, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Proverbs 25:26 puts the importance of Staying Power back into our moneybag:

“Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.”

Psalm 144:1 tells us to be Power Rangers:

“Of David. Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle…”

Judges 5:7 is proof of Girl Power:

“The villagers ceased in Israel; they ceased to be until I arose; I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel.”

So, what’s in our moneybag, or as a modern television commercial might ask, What’s in our wallet?

What we pack is what gives us power. Let’s pack the power of God so that others may come to him in truth and in love.
