Seven of God’s Alarm Clock Moments

In August of 2013, Lifehacker.com made a profound statement: Our bodies don’t like alarm clocks.

Ha! we say. We’ve known that all our lives. That’s why we use sunrise clocks, vibrating armbands, and clock radios. They’re all ways to bring ourselves to consciousness without jarring our brains from sleep.

We understand that unless we’re one of those lucky people who regularly wake up minutes before their alarm rings, we have no choice. We might choose to sleep in on weekends and when we’re on vacation, but when there’s a job to be done, we have to be up-and-at-’em.

If we don’t set our alarm clocks, we will be late to our jobs. Do it often enough, and our employers will replace us with more dependable workers.

What does God see as important enough that we cannot afford to ignore his alarm clock?

Here are seven Alarm Clock Moments from the Word of God:

Alarm Clock Moment #1:

We must clothe ourselves with the strength of the Lord.

Isaiah 51:9 tells us to awake, for we are the arm of the Lord, and we must gird ourselves with his power.

Alarm Clock Moment #2:

We must sing his praises unto the nations.

Psalm 57:8 commands us to awaken our instruments of thanksgiving, and to lift up the Lord before the people.

Alarm Clock Moment #3:

We must invite others to partake of the glories of Christ.

Solomon 4:16 is an invitation for the winds to awake, in order that the fragrant spices of salvation will draw the lost unto him.

Alarm Clock Moment #4:

We must break out of our churches and spread the gospel unto the world.

Zechariah 13:7 awakens the Sword of the Lord, for he will refine us in the scattering, and we will bring others unto him.

Alarm Clock Moment #5:

We must claim the world as God’s own, shouting victory in his name.

Judges 5:12 is Deborah’s story, a call to awaken to the fire of Christ’s love, and to lift up those who support the work of the Father.

Alarm Clock Moment #6:

We will receive our eternal rewards according to our lives here on earth.

Daniel 12:2 reveals Michael, the great prince, who warns that we will awake either to everlasting life or to disgrace and everlasting contempt.

Alarm Clock Moment #7:

God’s glory is hidden from the man who sleeps spiritually.

Luke 9:32 describes Peter and his companions, overcome with sleep, who only see Jesus’ glory when they come fully awake.

Have we been sleeping in spiritually? We can show up at church on Sunday mornings, sing in the choir, and even drop a check in the offering plate, and at the same time be asleep. The type of alarm clock we use to wake up is unimportant, but it must wake us up. God’s Alarm Clock Moments are too important for us to miss.

When we set Gods alarm, we’ll be on time for the work of the Lord.
