At the Switching Station

The great trains that traverse our country carry goods by rail to distant destinations. Once they are sent on their way, they cannot change course.

Unless they come to a switching station.

Does the train get to choose its destination? Or does the conductor’s control remain supreme? What if the train somehow gets on the wrong track? Does the conductor simply ride along until he arrives at the new destination?

Of course not! The conductor finds a way to get the train back on the right track. He stops the train and backs it to the switching station. Or, he finds a connecting line that will lead him back to his original destination.

The conductor has control of the train’s final destination.

The same is true in our walk with God. Look at Jonah 1:3-4. The prophet had been set on a course by God to witness to Nineveh. However, Jonah decided to jump the line, heading off to the city of Tarshish, instead. He even paid his own fare.

God didn’t go along. He sent a mighty wind to stir up the sea, and we know the rest of the story. A great fish swallowed Jonah and spit him out just where he needed to be.

God has switching stations in our lives. When we jump the tracks, he simply shifts us onto a new one, sending us once again to where he needs us to be. Sometimes that switching station might be an illness, or a financial change in our lives. God might send someone to cross our path with a revelation for us. Sometimes he even has to back us up to the beginning, placing us on the right track once again.

The quicker we learn to recognize God’s switching stations, the quicker we will get to our goal, becoming more like him.

When we desire to follow after God, he will keep our lives headed toward him.

Excerpt of the Day

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
