Sometimes we want to punch the heavens.
“God,” we cry, “why is this happening to me?”
We think of our experience with God as a boxing match, him against us, and we want to settle the score. We want to feel better about the bad things that have impacted our lives.
God says differently!
He doesn’t see his interaction with us as a competition. He sees it as a chance to redeem us from a life gone wrong.
Isaiah 1:18 reveals God’s desire to settle the score once and for all.
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”
The New International Version of the Bible, the NIV, says it like this:
“Come now, let us settle the matter.”
There’s no competition. God is offering us full and complete redemption.
There are two contrasting statements in this verse to emphasize God’s loving intent:
- Though our sins are like scarlet, they shall become white as snow.
- Though our sins are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
What’s significant about snow and wool?
They are virgin products, perfectly pure, fresh and unused for any purpose. They carry no stains, and they can be put to good use. The snow can be transformed into drinking water or used for cooking, and the wool for clothing, blankets, and other beneficial textiles.
We become better when God reaches out to us. Now’s our time to reach back to him.
