Because I Said So

How many times have we heard a parent call out in frustration, “Because I said so!”

Those words say something about the power differences between the parent and child. One has all the power, and the other has none at all. In reality, that is the way it should be. If the child is allowed to take control, bedlam will ensue, for no child has the maturity and depth of knowledge to do what is right in every situation.

The same is true of God and man. God may allow us free will, and he may endure certain levels of disobedience, but eventually he will put his foot down, giving us the only reason we need to hear.

“Because I said so!”

Revelation 16:18-19 tells us of the coming culmination of a great circle of rebellion. Millennia ago, Babylon was the center of the first organized rebellion against God. The Tower of Babel was an affront to the sanctity of the Almighty, and the languages of the world were confused by the power of God. In the process, he scattered the peoples of the world across the face of the globe, hoping to quash mans rebellious nature.

However, rebellion remains embedded in the hearts of men even unto this day. For four thousand years, God has tolerated humanity’s disobedience. That time is soon to come to an end. The Word tells us that a great earthquake such as has never been seen before will one day be centered on the location of that ancient city, and devastation will cover the land.

It will be God’s “Because I said so” moment, and the entire world will sit up and take notice. Even the islands will flee from his wrath, and the mountains will not be found.

We will tremble in the terrible and awesome day of the Lord.

God is our parent, and he is the one with all the power. We are wise to remember that it doesn’t do for him to have to tell us twice.

Where we are is not where we'll stay. God has greater works for us to do.
