Think back to Christmas Past.
Yes, like the movie, the one based on Dickens’ book, A Christmas Carol.
What are your memories? What comes back to you when you’re setting up your tree each year?
Setting out cookies for Santa?
A favorite ornament you always got to hang?
Or maybe it’s the icicles, silvery and slick, as you draped them over the tree limbs until you could reach no higher.
What gives you a good feeling up and down your spine, and it makes Christmas special for you?
Let’s pause for a moment and read Matthew 1:21:
“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Who is she? Mary of course, the mother of Jesus the carpenter.
What’s special about her son? He’s the Savior of mankind, come to unlock Heaven’s door.
What’s his plan? He came to save his people from their sins.
Once more, think back to Christmas Past. Further back. No, further than that. Go all the way back to the very first one. Yes, you’re seeing it. Jesus in a manger, the stinky smell of a barn all around.
It doesn’t look like much, does it? Not so very like our adorable mangers scenes.
Soak it up, for this is your amazing Christmas legacy. This is what this heartwarming holiday is all about. Jesus, the Christ child, born to walk this earth and become our sacrifice on a rugged cross so that we might find forgiveness for our sins.
Set those cookies out for Santa.
Hang this Jesus on your tree.
Jesus is what makes Christmas special. Let’s keep him in mind as we celebrate his special day.
