Where’s our strong muscle?
What’s our ace in the hole, the thing we are able to get right every time?
Or what if we don’t have one? We slip up repeatedly, and it seems we can’t do anything right.
Peter was the foppish flop in the Gospels. He was the bumbler who always seemed to trip over his own two feet.
Yet, Peter had a potential he had yet to fulfill. There was a job for Peter to do, if he could hold on long enough to do it.
Peter needed to be energized for Jesus, so that he could set aside his failures and move wholly into Christ.
Jesus pointed out to Peter how he saw him in Matthew 16:18:
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Jesus didn’t see a failure in Peter. He knew Peter could be a mighty man of God.
Jesus didn’t give up on Peter. He gave him a pep talk to build his enthusiasm.
Jesus didn’t criticize Peter. He offered him the highest honor in his kingdom.
Jesus sees our potential for success, not our past failures. It’s up to us to look at ourselves through Jesus’ eyes. We’ll see the success we can become.
We can reach our potential, if only we trust in Jesus to guide our steps as we travel toward him.
